UMH 657 "This Is the Day"
This is the day, this is the day
that the Lord has made,
that the Lord has made;
we will rejoice,
we will rejoice and be glad in it,
and be glad in it.
This is the day that the Lord has made;
we will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day,
this is the day that the Lord has made.
God, you call us from the corners of the Earth.
From the cities and the prairies, from the ghettos and the tables of the wealthy.
God, you sing to us from the corners of the universe.
In the gentle ocean breeze, in the colors that burst forth from our landscapes,
in the faces of children ravaged by war.
God, you speak to us from the corners of the Earth.
To the east, to the west, to the north and to the south,
above us, below us, and within us, your voice rings clear.
Send your voice to sing in us, we pray, as we worship this day. AMEN.
UMH 590 "Christ Loves the Church"
1 Christ loves the church, with grace beyond all measure.
We bear his name, for all the world to see.
He will not let us go or let us be,
but chooses earthen vessels for his treasure.
2 Christ bears the church, corrupted or conforming,
obsessed with trifles, blessing greed and war.
His love outwits us, spinning gold from straw,
through saints and prophets, praying and reforming.
3 Christ feeds the church, and fills us with a vision,
through praise and preaching, wine and broken bread,
of sharing people, doing what they've said,
who win the world's respect, or opposition.
4 Christ needs the church, to live and tell his story,
to praise his love and marvel at his trust,
till, bathed in light, awakened from the dust,
we walk with God, alive in grace and glory.
God of love, we bring our very selves to worship. Our triumphs. Our failures. Our vulnerabilities. Our greatest joys and our deepest sorrows. In this time set apart, may we hear the voice of Jesus urging us to feed and be fed, to love and be loved. AMEN.
Creator God, Your Eden flowed with mountain-fed rivers into lush valleys with orchards of pomegranates, grapes, and honeybees. The rain fell at the right time in the right amount. Even just a few decades ago, summertime was the season of shared community celebrations, weddings, parades, picnics, and growing crops. That has changed. This is not the Earth that Eden would recognize. Creator God, forgive us for our carelessness. Comfort those who suffer. We repent of this destructive path. Turn the hearts of those who would continue to do harm to this planet. Let us believe as you have taught us, that all things can be made new. AMEN.
God’s anger lasts but a moment,
but God’s favor lasts a lifetime.
The Lord forgives our shortcomings
and sends deliverance through Christ,
just as the Lord forgave Saul
and used him to spread the gospel.
Thanks be to God!
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory forever. AMEN.
UMH 111 "How Can We Name a Love"
1 How can we name a Love
that wakens heart and mind,
indwelling all we know
or think or do
or seek or find?
Within our daily world,
in every human face,
Love's echoes sound
and God is found,
hid in the commonplace.
2 If we awoke to life
built on a rock of care
that asked no great reward
but firm, assured,
was simply there,
we can, with parents' names,
describe, and thus adore,
Love unconfined,
a father kind,
a mother strong and sure.
3 When people share a task,
and strength and skills unite
in projects old or new,
to make or do
with shared delight,
our Friend and Partner's will
is better understood,
that all should share,
create, and care,
and know that life is good.
4 So in a hundred names,
each day we all can meet
a presence, sensed and shown
at work, at home,
or in the street.
Yet every name we see,
shines in a brighter sun:
In Christ alone
is Love full grown
and life and hope begun.
[John 21:1-19, CEB]
1 Later, Jesus himself appeared again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. This is how it happened: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two other disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter told them, “I’m going fishing.”
They said, “We’ll go with you.” They set out in a boat, but throughout the night they caught nothing. 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples didn’t realize it was Jesus.
5 Jesus called to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?”
They answered him, “No.”
6 He said, “Cast your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.”
So they did, and there were so many fish that they couldn’t haul in the net. 7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard it was the Lord, he wrapped his coat around himself (for he was naked) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they weren’t far from shore, only about one hundred yards.
9 When they landed, they saw a fire there, with fish on it, and some bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you’ve just caught.” 11 Simon Peter got up and pulled the net to shore. It was full of large fish, one hundred fifty-three of them. Yet the net hadn’t torn, even with so many fish. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples could bring themselves to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
15 When they finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
Simon replied, “Yes, Lord, you know I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 Jesus asked a second time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Simon replied, “Yes, Lord, you know I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 He asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was sad that Jesus asked him a third time, “Do you love me?” He replied, “Lord, you know everything; you know I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 I assure you that when you were younger you tied your own belt and walked around wherever you wanted. When you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and another will tie your belt and lead you where you don’t want to go.” 19 He said this to show the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. After saying this, Jesus said to Peter, “Follow me.”

(Written by Dr. Geran Lorraine.)
Cast your nets in familiar waters,
empty, time and again,
yet you look on the other side,
where there are whispers of abundance,
where the deep holds more than you dared hope.
in the soil beneath your feet,
ancient voices speak,
telling you to listen, to honor,
to remember the land as more than dirt,
as more than resource,
as kin, as life, as memory.
you have taken too much,
drunk from rivers that now run dry,
hunted the Earth until she wept,
yet still, she offers her hand,
still, she whispers—
there is another way.
to survive is to remember,
to reclaim the wisdom buried deep,
in the roots of the trees,
in the songs of the wind,
in the stories of those who came before,
who knew the Earth as mother,
who walked gently, who loved fiercely.
you are called to feed the sheep,
not only with bread,
not only with grain,
but with justice, with love,
with a vision of a world where all are fed,
where all are seen,
where all are honored.
in the silence of the dawn,
when the world is still and the sky blushes with light,
you find the strength to begin again,
to cast your nets, to sow new seeds,
to believe in the abundance that is promised,
if only you dare to trust,
if only you dare to see.
for survival is not just to endure,
but to thrive, to flourish,
to sing with the Earth,
to dance with the rain,
to know that you are part of this sacred web,
connected, interwoven,
bound together in this place.
and so, you begin again,
with the sun, with the moon, with the stars,
with the earth beneath our feet,
you begin again,
to survive,
to thrive.
God, we offer these gifts, given for the healing of creation, to you. Bless them and us to support the survival and thriving of all creation. AMEN.
UMH 453 "More Love to Thee, O Christ"
1. More love to thee, O Christ,
more love to thee!
Hear thou the prayer I make
on bended knee.
This is my earnest plea:
More love, O Christ, to thee;
more love to thee,
more love to thee!
2. Once earthly joy I craved,
sought peace and rest;
now thee alone I seek,
give what is best.
This all my prayer shall be:
More love, O Christ, to thee;
more love to thee,
more love to thee!
3. Let sorrow do its work,
come grief and pain;
sweet are thy messengers,
sweet their refrain,
when they can sing with me:
More love, O Christ, to thee;
more love to thee,
more love to thee!
4. Then shall my latest breath
whisper thy praise;
this be the parting cry
my heart shall raise;
this still its prayer shall be:
More love, O Christ, to thee;
more love to thee,
more love to thee!
